The Psyke Project: Apnea
08/07/08 || Kampfar
According to themselves, The Psyke Project is, and I quote: A hardcore metal band who combine the fast insane riffs with the slow and brutal headbanger riffs.
Not the best use of English since Shakesperm there, no shit, but not bad enough for me to proclaim there to be something rotten in the educational system in the state of Denmark, either. Anyhow, to me it reads like they describe some brutal death (core) choked with blasts and wicked breakdowns, shit able to tear you a couple of new ones for your father to molest. Tell papa to zip his pants, for here is little tearing, other than on my fucking nerves, that is. I will elaborate on why, but first some more fucking nonsense, of course spiced with shades of relevant information.
“Apnea” is not a new album, far from, or more like a year, as I downloaded it last summer already. And not only that, I gave it some spins as well. After a couple or so – my dear diary is unclear on the subject, the entry seemingly smeared by my tears of acidic blood – I concluded it to be fucking uninteresting and pretty much forgot all about it. That until the day our Lord got “Apnea” thrown in his general direction and before long commanded one of us fucks to pass a verdict.
I didn’t yaysay for a chance to spew bile and negativity, believe me, for over the last year my taste in music has, if not exactly changed, at least evolved quite a bit. I will not bore you with the details, but the style of The Psyke Project is something I’m nowadays able to digest, “Daikini” evidence of that. “Apnea”, on the other hand, is more of a grey, slippery eel I find very hard to chew down and swallow.
The reason I name it slippery is due to the fact I’ve heard the grey blur through at least 10 times and all I can sharply recall from the time (mis)spent is the ender, “Not in my time” – a sort of ballad with punch, and a thoroughly noisy fucker named “Panic”. Apart from them 2 (out of 10) my mind draw blanks at the same rate as a very horny and likewise sterile dude stuck in a spree of wanking would. There is this tiny voice in the back of my head telling me to give it another go, to see if it’ll finally settle, but it fooled me enough times already. Fuck it, as David Richard Berkowitz never said.
“Daikini”, as hinted at, is a better album, and the reason why is because it is a more varied and resilient ride. It doesn’t exactly hurt that some of the riffs there sports a proper death metal edge, either, an edge which on “Apnea” is close to fucking gone. Or gone. I sure won’t give it another to hear if I can spot a trace or three.
I name the music on “Apnea” for Teflon Core, but it could be me and my brain here. Avid fans of Isis, Neurosis, The Ocean, Cult Of Luna, you go on, are advised to check this one out regardless of my opinion. The vocalist, even though core, strays from annoyance, the mix is fine, likewise are the instrument treated, but I still can’t penetrate this shit.
5,5 out of 10.
